[PRESS RELEASE] Historic FIBA Intercontinental Cup, star-studded Hall of Fame ceremony will align in Singapore

SINGAPORE, 18 JUNE 2024 – Basketball fever will light up Singapore this September as the international fraternity comes together to celebrate new milestones and past achievements.

The FIBA Intercontinental Cup 2024, taking place from September 12-15 at the Singapore Sports Hub, will be the most global edition of the tournament yet, featuring teams from five continents for the first time in its history. The FIBA Hall of Fame Class of 2024 enshrinement ceremony will also take place in Singapore that week, giving fans a unique opportunity to cheer on past and present basketball stars.

After becoming the first Asian city to host the FIBA Intercontinental Cup last year, Singapore will again play a part in making history when 2024 National Basketball League champions Tasmania JackJumpers become the first team from Oceania to compete in the tournament. This year’s Asian representatives Al Riyadi from Lebanon earned their spot at the FIBA Intercontinental Cup 2024 after winning the inaugural Basketball Champions League Asia on June 15.

Completing the line-up are Unicaja from Spain (Basketball Champions League Europe), Angola’s Petro de Luanda (Basketball Africa League), Argentinian outfit Quimsa (Basketball Champions League Americas) and National Basketball Association (NBA) G League team NBA G League United, ensuring participation from all five FIBA regions for the first time.

“The FIBA Intercontinental Cup is a unique global experience in club basketball, but the 34th edition will set a remarkable milestone in basketball history. It’s only fitting that Singapore, which ushered in the new era of the competition last year, will also provide the stage for its expansion to Oceania and for the FIBA Hall of Fame induction ceremony,” commented FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis.

Roy Teo, Chief, Industry Development, Technology & Innovation, Sport Singapore said: “We are pleased to further our partnership with FIBA to grow our local sport ecosystem and reinforce Singapore’s position as a hub for hosting international sporting events such as the FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup and FIBA Intercontinental Cup. This year, we are excited to host the Hall of Fame for the very first time and welcome some of basketball’s biggest legends to our shores. We look forward to creating more sporting experiences, driving high performance and mass participation, and in turn inspiring both the basketball fraternity and the community.”

The groupings for the 34th FIBA Intercontinental Cup 2024 are as follows:

Group AGroup B
Unicaja (Spain)Quimsa (Argentina)
Petro de Luanda (Angola)NBA G League United (USA)
Al Riyadi (Lebanon)Tasmania JackJumpers (Australia)

Each group competes in a single round robin format and the two group winners will square off in the Final on September 15 to determine the FIBA Intercontinental Cup 2024 champion.

The two group runners-up will meet in the 3rd-Place Game, while the teams that finish third in their respective groups will play for fifth place overall.

“We are excited to welcome the continental champions to Singapore for the FIBA Intercontinental Cup 2024. As a world-class destination for live sporting action, Singapore Sports Hub has hosted numerous international sporting events including two editions of the FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup and Asia’s inaugural FIBA Intercontinental Cup in 2023. To complement the international sporting calendar, we support local competitions such as the Pink Warriors 3×3 Basketball Tournament held at our hard courts. Our support for basketball also extends beyond hosting events with our easily accessible free-to-play courts that encourage ground up growth of the sport. Come September, the community can expect thrilling basketball action on court and a wide range of experiential activities and entertainment off-court. We are driven to inspire more people and youths to play and watch the sport at the Sports Hub, the home of two premier basketball competitions,” said Yazed Osman, Group Head, Events & Placemaking, Kallang Alive Sport Management.

In addition to cheering on the top basketball teams, fans will get a chance to witness the induction ceremony for the FIBA Hall of Fame Class of 2024 on September 14 – the first time the event is held in Singapore, underlining the global character of the September FIBA Intercontinental event.

USA’s Reggie Miller and Serbia’s Predrag Stojakovic headline the 2024 inductees, which also include fellow former players Miao Lijie of China, Danira Nakic-Bilic of Croatia, Kirk Samuel Penney of New Zealand, Romain Sato of Central African Republic, Skaidrite Smildzina-Budovska of Latvia and Italian-American coach Dan Peterson.
